PROMOTION SPOTLIGHT:
QUIKRETE® SHOOTOUT WINNER RECEIVES NEW BASKETBALL COURT FOR SCHOOL, COMMUNITY
In our previous issue, the QUIKRETE® Companies announced that fourteen-year-old Kate Thibodeau of Woolwich, Maine, was the winner of the QUIKRETE® Shootout, a nationwide contest in partnership with Fox Sports Net's "Best Damn Sports Show Period." The QUIKRETE® Shootout contest awarded the most deserving person and community, selected from submitted essays, a $15,000 basketball court concrete-makeover.
Kate's winning essay focused on the fact that the basketball court at Woolwich Central School - from where she just graduated in May - was badly in need of repair and unable to be used by the community.
After identifying Kate as the winner and receiving permission from Woolwich Central officials, the QUIKRETE® Companies oversaw the repaving of the court, installation of a signature QUIKRETE® concrete border as well as commemorative plaque signifying Kate's achievement.
On Thursday, Aug. 24, the court was dedicated at a public ceremony outside Woolwich Central School. Dedication activities included games, giveaways and basketball exhibitions by the Harlem Rockets. The dedication was broadcast on Fox Sports Net's "Best Damn Sports Show Period" on August 29.
"The QUIKRETE® Shootout contest was a complete success, especially since we found such a deserving winner in Kate Thibodeau and her Woolwich Central School," said Dennis Winchester, QUIKRETE® executive vice president. "The QUIKRETE Companies value tradition and community - it is our hope that the traditions started on this court will continue for years to come."
Kate also was presented with a commemorative basketball signed by John Salley, Tom Arnold and Chris Rose - the hosts of the "Best Damn Sports Show Period."

IN THE NEWS:
QUIKRETE® CONCRETE USED IN CONSTRUCTION OF GEORGIA AQUARIUM

Visit the Georgia Aquarium web site >>The QUIKRETE® Companies supplied six million pounds of mortar and grout in the construction of the Georgia Aquarium, located in downtown Atlanta, Ga. The Georgia Aquarium is the largest in the world and has welcomed more than 3 million visitors since opening in November 2005.
Bibler Masonry Inc. of Roswell, Ga. used 80-pound bags of QUIKRETE® Mason Mix Type S Mortar and QUIKRETE® Fine Core-fill Grout to construct block walls which went to form the Georgia Aquarium's main atrium space and partitioning walls for five underwater-themed exhibit areas.
As the largest aquarium in the world in total square footage, number of fish - over 100,000 and in amount of water - more than eight million gallons, the main atrium acts as the central hub of the Georgia Aquarium's more than 505,000 square feet of fresh and salt water exhibits and educational centers as well as meeting, event and retail areas.
In completion, the masonry contractor laid roughly 400,000 blocks with QUIKRETE® products to construct interior dividing and load walls, exhibit build outs and supporting on-site structures. Given the nature of the masonry operation which required constant movement between multiple work stations and between floors, Bibler Masonry decided to use QUIKRETE® products due to the convenience and consistency of the 80-pound bags.
Along with the World of Coca-Cola to be completed in 2007, the Georgia Aquarium continues to lead the ongoing urban and cultural development occurring around Centennial Olympic Park and within the downtown Atlanta community.

PROJECT SHOWCASE:
SECURE YOUR MAILBOX POST: IMPRESS YOUR MAILMAN

Whether moving into a new home or defining the unique character of your property, most homeowners will eventually need to install a mailbox and mailbox post. Luckily, this is a relatively simple and inexpensive weekend-friendly undertaking.
Solid footing is crucial to successfully installing a mailbox post - providing the long-lasting durability necessary for your mailbox to weather the elements.
To install a new mailbox post, homeowners will need QUIKRETE® Fast-Setting Concrete, which typically sets in 20 to 40 minutes, a QUIKRETE® QUIK-TUBE™ building form, QUIKRETE® All-Purpose Gravel or crushed stone, a level, shovel or post-hole digger, pressure-treated wooden post and, of course, a mailbox.
  • Begin by checking with your local postmaster as to what type of mailbox to purchase. Generally, mailboxes should be placed 3-1/2 feet to 4 feet from the road, with the front of the mailbox 6 inches to 8 inches from the curb.
  • Next, dig a hole one-third the length of the post, plus an additional 6 inches for gravel. The diameter of the hole should be about three times the diameter of the post.
  • Pack the dirt inside the hole to remove any air pockets, and pour about 6 inches of QUIKRETE® All-Purpose Gravel into the hole for proper drainage.
  • Before pouring the concrete mix, position the QUIK-TUBE™ in the hole and backfill for added stability.
  • Set the post into the hole and use the level to ensure the post is parallel with the ground.
  • Pour the dry concrete mix into the hole until about 3 inches to 4 inches from the top.
  • Follow the directions on the bag by incorporating water into the dry concrete mix and allow the water to soak in completely.
  • Once the mix begins to firmly hold the post, start filling in the hole with dirt.
  • Wait about 4 hours before mounting your mailbox onto the post.

ASK "Q":

Can I use the QUIKRETE® Vinyl Concrete Patcher over an entire driveway?
-- Elise Schadler, Baltimore, Md.

Elise, as the name implies, this product is designed for patching rather than resurfacing. For resurfacing applications, use the QUIKRETE® Concrete Resurfacer or QUIKRETE® Sand (Topping) Mix. QUIKRETE® Concrete Acrylic Fortifier is ideal for use in combination with QUIKRETE® Sand (Topping) Mix to provide improved bond strength.

Who is the founder of The QUIKRETE® Companies?
-- John Menser, Charlotte, N.C.

In 1940, the QUIKRETE® Companies were founded by James "Gene" Winchester, who anticipated a growing national "Do-It-Yourself" market and recognized that the consumers needed pre-mixed, dry-packaged concrete for many uses.
Under Mr. Winchester's vision and guidance, the QUIKRETE® Companies developed an entire line of concrete-related products specially-designed to meet the needs of consumers around the home and professionals on the job.
