QUIKRETE® Helps Restore Historic Rt 66

WINSLOW, Ariz. – What does it take to repair an American landmark in a city made famous by a quintessential American rock band?

Try America's most trusted brand of packaged concrete.

U.S. Route 66 – the "Main Street of America," as it's known to many – dates to 1926 and is a quintessential American icon. But, even landmarks such as the "Mother Road" need to be repaired every so often to keep them up and running for another generation.

So, city officials in Winslow – the city made famous by The Eagles' 1972 hit song "Take it Easy" – selected Phoenix-based dbA Construction to repair this famed federal highway. As part of the project, which lasted from April to July 2009, dbA Construction turned to The QUIKRETE® Companies, which because of its vast distribution network successfully supplied contractors with the materials needed to guarantee project deadlines were met.

QUIKRETE® Awarded Shotcrete Magazine 2009 Outstanding Underground Project - Hartland Corridor Clearance Improvement Project

As part of a 3-year project, Norfolk Southern Railway, which operates 21,500 mi (34,600 km) of track in 22 eastern states, is expanding 28 tunnels along the Heartland Corridor, a vital line that connects the port of Hampton Roads, VA, and Chicago, IL, by adding up to 2 ft (609.6 m) of headroom, which will allow larger trains and thereby more cargo to use the route and cut roughly 200 mi (321 km) off their trip. The $150 million project is slated for completion in 2010. Norfolk Southern hired three contractors to complete the project: Johnson Western Gunite Company, San Leandro, CA; LRL Construction Company, Tillamook, OR; and R.J. Corman Railroad Company, Nicholasville, KY. The material supplier selected for the tunnel work was The Quikrete Companies.

ASTM Committee Approves New Preblended Mortar Specifications New ASTM Method for Mortars

ASTM released a new Specification for "Preblended Dry Mortar Mix for Unit Masonry", ASTM C 1714, at the end of 2009. This specification defines quality and testing requirements for factory produced mortars. Requirements have been added beyond ASTM C 270 which is the existing industry standard specification for "Mortar for Unit Masonry". The new specifications include mortars used for concrete masonry units and for brick. All QUIKRETE® bulk and packaged mortars satisfy or exceed the requirements of ASTM C 270 and of the new ASTM C 1714 Specification.

The use of preblended dry mortar mix is a widely used and accepted construction practice. Factory pre-blending of the mortar provides modern manufacturing control of the mix component batching and the quality of the raw materials and ultimately the quality and consistency of the mortar.

The new C 1714 standard specifies quality for any admixtures added at a customer's request. Batching accuracy and precision are specified. Testing for performance is specified. All mortars claiming qualification under C 1714 must also meet the requirements of C 270. QUIKRETE® has always met these stringent requirements.
