Winterize and Protect Your Concrete

Winterize and Protect Your Concrete

Snow, Ice, water and deicing chemicals can wreak havoc on unprotected concrete and masonry surfaces. Throughout the winter months, water penetrates and saturates unprotected concrete and surface cracks. A few simple and inexpensive preventative measures can help you avoid winter damage and costly concrete repairs.

Cracks in Concrete: Water flows through cracks in concrete and saturates the base material. As the water freezes and thaws, the slab can lift and fall creating ever widening cracks. QUIKRETE Polyurethane Concrete Crack Sealant is a textured caulk that permanently seals and waterproof cracks in concrete up to ½“ wide. QUIKRETE Concrete Crack Seal is another alternative for sealing cracks in concrete up to ¼” wide. Concrete Crack Seal is a self-leveling, pourable latex emulsion that blends with the natural color of concrete. (Read More)

Building a Concrete Patio

Building a Concrete Patio

A poured concrete patio can be a gray, utilitarian slab or it may be a highly decorative focal point of your backyard living environment. By including a decorative finishing technique in your plans, such as exposed aggregates or etching with acid stain, your design options are virtually unlimited. A concrete patio also may serve as a subbase for a mortared flagstone, tile, or paver patio.

Building a concrete patio (or any concrete slab) is similar in many ways to the walkway project. Before beginning your project be sure and read through these pages for additional information, particularly on the subjects of finishing and curing. If your patio is larger than 10 ft. x 10 ft., you will definitely need to include control joints. You’ll also want to consider buying or renting a power concrete mixer—see the quantity calculator for estimating how many bags of concrete your patio will require. Detailed project instructions are available, or you can visit our concrete mix product page.

Building Paths with the WALKMAKER

Building Paths with the WALKMAKER™

A well-made walkway or garden path not only stands up to years of hard use, it enhances the natural landscape and complements a home’s exterior features. While traditional walkway materials like brick and stone have always been prized for both appearance and durability, most varieties are quite pricey and often difficult to install. As an easy and inexpensive alternative, you can build a new concrete path using manufactured forms. The result is a beautiful pathway that combines the custom look of brick or natural stone with all the durability and economy of poured concrete.

Building a path is a great do-it-yourself project. Once you’ve laid out the path, you mix the concrete, set and fill the form, then lift off the form to reveal the finished design. Detailed project instructions are available, or you can visit our Walkmaker product page.
