The country’s oldest and largest outdoor musical theater, The MUNY underwent a $100 million renovation starting at the conclusion of its centennial summer season. Upgrades to the historic 11,000-seat facility included a new rotating stage, a new light bridge, LED screen for digital projections, an expanded orchestra pit and new production staging areas highlighted by a VIP room.
A critical, but less high-profile element of the renovation was the construction of two mechanical rooms fitted with large fans for cooling the audience during shows. A Continuous Insulation (CI) system featuring a QUIKRETE® One Coat Fiberglass Reinforced Stucco (FRS) hard coat was used to meet energy building codes. A resilient impact resistant alternative to an Exterior Insulation Finishing System (EIFS), the FRS was sprayed over fiberglass mat gypsum wall sheathing, vapor permeable fluid-applied membrane (weather barrier), rigid board insulation Extruded Polystyrene Foam (XPS) and metal lathe. As part of the finishing process, the stucco was sculpted to complement the artistic circular vent design on exterior of the mechanical rooms. Nearly 15,000 square feet of FRS was pumped from a staging area and applied at ¾” thick.
QUIKRETE® One Coat Fiberglass Reinforced Stucco is a Portland cement-based plaster designed for use in one coat stucco applications over substrates of fiberboard, plywood, oriented strand board (OSB), gypsum sheathing or expanded polystyrene (EPS) insulation board on exterior walls of wood or steel stud construction. It may also be used as base coat in conventional two- or three-coat stucco systems.
